JVS Boston is an excellent place to volunteer. You will make an immediate and tangible impact on recipients of JVS' programs and services, and the volunteer engagement staff and others are helpful and communicative.

I've been working with JVS in ESOL classes for 6 or 7 years, at all levels from complete beginners to advanced medical personnel at local hospitals. The teachers have been wonderful: not just competent, but compassionate. Class content is appropriate, and creative, and the students are engaged. As a volunteer, it feels great to be appreciated, and also have the opportunity to learn more about my own culture and that of my students!

The curriculum is STRICTLY limited to the goal of helping new immigrants get jobs, vocational English: vocabulary, interview skills, not broader communication skills, e.g. conversation with native speakers, citizenship, getting medical attention, basic grammar... Anything not geared to get them jobs and on their way is not a priority, if not actually discouraged.
